Congratulations to the Pell City High School Debate Team that is currently ranked number one in the Birmingham Area Debate League. The PCHS Debate Team has debated two topics this year: The United States federal government should prohibit the use of animals for entertainment purposes and that Alabama should ban the ability to conceal carry a firearm.” It is important to note that the students must prepare a six-minute speech, which includes three justifications with statistics to back up their arguments for each side of the debate. The students have debated in three tournaments this year, in which the teams have had to debate both the Affirmative and Negative sides of the topic in two separate rounds of Lincoln-Douglas style debates at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. The PCHS Debate Team competed in eight debates on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, and won six of the eight debates. The PCHS Debate Team defeated Gardendale High School, Pleasant Grove High School and Clay Chalkville High School in order to maintain their #1 rank in the Birmingham Area Debate League. Pell City High School also has three individual speakers in the “Top Ten Individual Speakers” for the entire Birmingham area. The #1 speaker in the Birmingham area is Shelby Savage, the #4 speaker in the Birmingham area is Katie Wills and the #9 speaker in the Birmingham area is Carson Bruce. The PCHS Debate Team has one final debate tournament on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Samford University at 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm. The students on the Pell City High School Debate Team are as follows: Bradley Bricker, Carson Bruce, Blyss Burns, Jasmine Davis, Michele Guthrie, Keara Kelley, Kelsey Kerr, Kylie Kerr, Randy McCoy, Breonna Oden, Paige Sandheinrich, Shelby Savage, Brandon Turner, Brennan Turner, Rolanda Turner, and Katie Wills. These students have and will continue to represent Pell City High School and the community with the utmost dignity, class and respect. Congratulations to the PCHS Debate Team students for the recognition for all of their hard work and dedication. Special thanks also go out to all of those that reached out in the community to help the PCHS Debate Team, such as Sergeant Shaddix with the Pell City Police Department and the St. Clair County Under Sherriff Mr. Bill Murray.
