Congratulations to the following recipients of awards at Government House this morning! Below are their citations for your interest :-) Queen’s Scout Award Lauren Alexander – Pioneer Venturer Unit I enjoyed my time in Scouting and the challenges we completed to achieve this award very much. One highlight was when our Venturer unit did the St James walkway. It was perfect weather for the first three days, but on the last day the rain was intense. That was a highlight, but the best part was the Scout Service and Residential project which I did at a Primary School in Fiji for eight months. The beauty, generosity and smiles are unforgettable. Adrian Burt – Nelson Venturer Unit I am a 5th generation Scout and 2nd generation Queen’s Scout. I have enjoyed doing my Queen’s Scout and attended many events both locally and nationally. I was lucky enough to attend two New Zealand Ventures. One of the best parts of doing this award was all the friends I made along the way, the fun I had and the ever lasting memories. Rebecca Cook – Hillcrest Venturer Unit I have gained many life experiences as well as lifelong friends through completing my award as well as many amazing opportunities. I have spent one year volunteering at a rest home where I learnt compassionate and caring traits, with a lot of respect for the elderly. I was also lucky enough to attend a 21 day Outward Bound classic course in Anikiwa. I learnt to live in the moment, take up challenges and live by the outward bound motto of ‘there is more in you’. I have definitely gained experiences from completing my Queen’s Scout that will help me in the next chapters of my life. Kathryn Currie – Valley Venturer Unit The best part about getting this award was that although I got declined at the time from getting it for no longer being a youth member as I was a warranted Kea Leader, unbeknown to me a leader was still watching out for me, so that I could eventually receive the award and have it presented six years later. Abraham Faid – Pioneer Venturer Unit The first major thing that comes to mind when thinking about the Queen’s Scout Award is the 2012 Achievement Camp as I was able to meet may people who are passionate and keen about the award. I was inspired massively by this camp. Another highlight was Venture 2014 where I met heaps of awesome people and had a wicked time. I also enjoyed planning a programme for seven weeks and during this time completed many different activities and award modules. Grant Hawthorne – Ngati Toa Venturer Unit Completing this award has been my goal since I heard about it when I was 12. It’s been challenging and satisfying to fulfil. To look back on it now, at what I have had to do to achieve this award, I feel proud and impressed by what I have accomplished. Things that would once have been challenging to me, no longer are. It’s a pity though, this is my life goal since I was 12, and now that I have fulfilled it I’m going to have to find another new challenge to do. Abigail Johns – Midhirst Venturer Unit Over the last five years there have been many ups and downs but looking back I am glad I pulled through and conquered this award. I am happy and proud to say that I have completed the Queen’s Scout Award and I feel I have gained a lot from achieving it. I have enjoyed working with my unit and have made lifelong friends. They helped me and we worked as a team. This journey has taught me how to keep moving forward even when the going gets tough, as it’s worth it in the end. Maru Kenny – Iron Duke Sea Venturer Unit I enjoyed the challenges that had to be overcome during my time working towards the award. I also enjoyed the feeling of achieving these goals and there was no single highlight during the process of completing my Queen’s Scout Award. I look back on all the memories of my time in Venturers with glee and seeing how far I have come over the years. Nathan Lewis – St Joseph’s Venturer Unit In my time at Venturers and working towards my Queen’s Scout Award I have had so many new experiences and made a lot of memories; the best would be doing scuba diving at Venture last year. I have also met so many new people I wouldn’t have met if not for Venturers and developed a passion for the outdoors. Working towards the award has also pushed me to try a lot of new things that I wouldn’t have otherwise had the opportunities to do. Nick Miller – All Saints Birkenhead Venturer Unit My journey to achieving my Queen’s Scout has taken three years of hard work! I have enjoyed every minute of it. I pushed my boundaries, went out of my comfort zone and was physically exhausted. I kept going and found an inner strength I never knew I had. All of the new experiences I have had with Scouting have prepared me for my future. There are two people I want to emulate = In the bush – Bear Grylls and In my life – Lord Baden Powell. Thaddeus Newman-Dennis – Eastbourne Venturer Unit My reason for doing my Queen’s Scout is the reward that will follow when I put it in my CV it will be given great kudos. I have always enjoyed the trips and the experiences that I have gained such as how to survive off track in the bush. These experiences will stick with me for the rest of my life and have made me a better person. I will try my best to continue to give back to the community as I enjoy helping others especially the younger Scout members. John Paver – Tawa Venturer Unit The highlight for me was the tramp through the Abel Tasman National Park. It was really rewarding to have done a five day tramp and at the end being able to say I had organised and run it. The award scheme itself was great as it gave me the flexibility in what I wanted to do. This helped make it rewarding as I can say about the award “I did it my way”. Nicholas Shearer – South Taranaki Venturer Unit Working towards my award was a bit of a challenge, having to work on my own to start with as there was not a unit in my district. While waiting for the more senior Scouts to move up to Venturers I went along to Scouts and helped the leader run the section. After a year, the South Taranaki Unit started up. I have learnt that putting the effort in my work was worthwhile. I made so many new friends from various national schools that I attended. Scouting has given me lots of opportunities, confidence, hope and most of all I achieved a lot of challenging awards and overcame many challenges. Simon Teesdale – Ngaio Venturer Unit The highlights for me when completely this award would have to be the time spent meeting new people and helping others. I really enjoyed the Jamboree and the time spent with others who I had not met before. I also enjoyed all the tramping I did with friends. Joseph Turner Steel – 1st Marton Venturer Unit Working towards my Queen’s Scout was an amazing experience that I am so grateful I had the chance to participate in. It provided many wonderful opportunities to go on fantastic activities and meet some amazing people. My favourite experience was the Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School which I would never have had the chance to so outside of Venturers. Gaining my Queen’s Scout has been very enlightening and is a great milestone toward my future. Nathan Williams – Waimate Venturer Unit I am very grateful for participating in the Queen’s Scout Award. It has enabled me to get out of my comfort zone and develop as a person. The Queen’s Scout Award has introduced me to new experiences which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I found my service project very interesting and rewarding. I feel that I am much more confident in myself since completing this award. The Queen’s Scout Award has been hugely beneficial to me, and I am proud of my achievements. Queen’s Scout and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award James Bridgman – Kings’ Venturer Unit I truly value the lessons I have learnt and skills that I have developed over the course of completing these awards. My residential project was a real eye opening experience, yet enjoyable too. Additionally my service has been rewarding and my skills enlightening. However, I know that my greatest reward has been the friendships built during this time with Venturers. Hugh Stephens – King’s Venturer Unit I have traversed some of the great mountains of New Zealand while working towards my awards. I have been pushed to limits I never thought I would achieve such as setting sail into the sea for two weeks or learning to fly a plane solo. I have learnt skills that help me forward in life such as medical training, mechanical maintenance and leadership structure. I have become persistent and confident through tramping, flying and sailing. I have spent the last five years working up to this moment and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award William Buckley – Kings Venturer Unit While doing my Duke of Edinburgh Gold award, I feel I gained a huge of amount from it. Doing the Gilliespie Pass was a very good experience, especially as for this tramp, the group of myself and only a few other boys were much more independent than we had been in the past in terms of navigation and organisation. My residential project; Youth to Everest was a very different and new experience as well as a lot of fun. I took part in helping with tree planting in the Everest region and visiting schools and playing football against the locals. Over the 4 years it has take me to complete the 3 levels of the Duke of Edinburgh’s award scheme I have made many new friends, visited some fascinating places and learnt some life changing and valuable new skills. Basil Connor - Eastbourne Venturer Unit For me the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme has been a way for me to get to do even more of the thing I love most, having adventures! Liam O’Connor – Taiaotea Air Venturer Unit Through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Ive Learnt new skills that have vastly improved my capabilities, I have hiked through numerous places over long days and across large distances, I have seen parts of New Zealand that have given me amazing experiences and great stories, I have grown to be an independent thinker and have been a part of many opportunities to give back to the community. Through the award I have become a mature, capable and helpful member of society.
