Congress Benefits Financially from Obama’s Abuse of Power Do you believe in Obama administrative magic? Congress can rest easy. Obama has stepped in to save the day. Through some sort of executive power still unnamed in the Constitution, Obama has resolved the issue perplexing members of Congress and their staffers since Obamacare was passed — how do they pay for their health care on the Obamacare exchange??? Back when the law was working its way through the Senate, Senator Grassley inserted a provision that members of Congress and their staff would receive their insurance through the Obamacare exchange. The final version of the bill, however, left out any mention of the government continuing to subsidize their insurance. Faced with the reality of having to live by the law they wrote, senators and representatives were put through an emotional rollercoaster. We heard stories of low paid staffers with sick children at home, staffers having to deal with the pressure of higher health care costs and a potential “brain drain” on Washington as Congressional aides were predicted to bolt their jobs for more lucrative offers in the private sector. But Obama has calmed the legislative waters. All it took was a conversation with the Office of Personnel Management and a new guidance will be issued giving members of Congress and their staffs insurance subsidies equal to 75% of the cost of their policies on the exchange. Never mind that there is no authority in the Constitution for a president to issue such a workaround to an unpopular law, never mind that this is the latest in a long list of such workarounds that the Obama administration has dreamt up, and never mind that well paid members of Congress will receive subsidies far more generous than any private citizen paid for by citizens in most cases making less than members of Congress. Representative Tom Price (R-Georgia) summed it up well. “What we’ve got now is governance by blog post and press release." This is not the way our founders had envisioned America to work and our Congressional representatives need to hear from us. Please call your senator and US representative. Let them know that by accepting the Obamacare subsidies without passing an amendment to the law, they are engaging in the same abuse of power as President Obama as he tries to hold together an ill conceived, destructive piece of legislation that is single handedly destroying our health care system and our economy.
