Congress News: CREATION OF NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE PROPOSED A lawmaker has underscored the urgency of establishing an organized and sustained specialized care and prevention measures against cancer in the country, before it’s too late! In introducing House Bill 2077, Rep. Georgina P. De Venecia (4th District, Pangasinan) noted that cancer is the third leading cause of death in the Philippines, outranked only by communicable and cardiovascular diseases. HB is seeking the creation of the National Cancer Institute of the Philippines, with regional centers, to provide centralized planning, programs and activities to arrest the increasing number of cancer victims in the country. “Cancer is estimated to afflict 189 persons per 100,000 Filipinos. Statistics show that cancer kills 103 Filipinos a day or four Filipinos per hour. The incidence and mortality rates of cancer in the Philippines has been increasing the past three decades and this trend is expected to continue if organized and sustained specialized care and preventive measures against cancer are not initiated,” De Venecia stressed. The establishment of regional centers, as provided by HB 2077, presents in concrete form the government’s intention to make specialized health services more accessible to people outside highly urbanized areas like Metro Manila and the cities of Cebu and Davao where cancer treatment is traditionally available, De Venecia added.
