Congress, a political organization that was founded in 1957 to champion the rights of the people of Eastern Sudan, are appealing to the International Association of Democratic Lawyers to bring their case before the ICC. Eastern Sudan is one region that has been under neglect since Sudan attained independence in 1956. In January 2005, innocent civilians were brutally killed along Port Sudan, many of whom were women and children, carrying out peaceful demonstrations. “They were shot down by the government forces brought by plane from Khartoum. The governor of the Red Sea estate admitted later, that the demonstration of the Beja people was peaceful and that there was just a misunderstanding,’ a press release sent to The New Sudan Vision disclosed. Like many in other marginalized regions of Sudan, the people of Eastern Sudan have pinned their hopes on the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended north-south civil war. But this same development has been a point of worry for the East since SPLM soldiers that were in Eastern Sudan were redeployed in compliance with the agreement, prompting the Beja Congress to be on constant alert about the possibility of conflict escalating. “The government kills the Beja people directly using force and land mines on one side and on the other by leaving them alone to face famines, natural disasters, diseases and extinction”, the press release read. The Beja Congress said that the war crimes and crimes against humanity happening in Eastern Sudan are no different from the ones president Bashir has been indicted on in Darfur and want the International Association of Democratic Lawyers to forward their case to the ICC.
