Congressional Republicans have taken the comfortable position of summoning the border as a boogeyman, pointing fingers and not doing anything about the humanitarian crisis we are facing. Congress needs to participate in governing. We need to also focus on the root of what is pushing these children to make the dangerous trek north. Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador all rank among the most violent countries in the world. Making matters worse, Congress has pulled back support for development and international cooperation with Central America, slashing more than 400 million dollars over the last few years. To give you a sense of scale, Pakistan receives about $2 billion dollars annually in foreign aid from the United States. All 20+ countries in Latin America receive only about $1.5 billion.
