Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney had met with UCCANYC and the Ukrainian community last Saturday 3/8. She asks what more she can do, especially with the impending illegal sham referendum (her words) in Crimea this weekend. She has called for a press conference this Saturday at 12:00 at the Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island in NYC (fdrfourfreedomspark.org) where she would like the Ukrainian and Crimean community to speak out about the plight of their homeland on the eve of that vote, in a park dedicated to the Four Freedoms pronounced by Roosevelt, given his historical connection to Yalta, and with the UN reflecting at us from across the river. I am reaching out to our fellow diaspora communities that have joined us these past months, the Crimean Tatars, the Turks, the Georgians, the Polish, the Circassians, the Belorusan, the Latvians, the Lithuainians, the Estonians....... The congresswomans staff recommends that in addition to remarks by organization leaders we will aim for something more somber, perhaps a commemoration by clergy with pictures of the Nebesna Sotnia carried by children through the sculpture park. I invite all our children to walk together. For those who are not familiar with the park, there are great views to be had of it from both sides of the river.
