Connecting survivors with economic opportunity is the best way to break the cycle of exploitation. David Batstone, Co-founder of Not For Sale (In Leos opinion theyre THE leading NGO in the world specializing in SMART ACTIVISM to put an end to human trafficking/modern day slavery) Here at Ethical Choices the conclusion weve come to is this: We can fly in circles around the globe, hold meetings of awareness, link arms with people and sing Kumbaya, we can raise money to put a Band-Aid on a situation (tragically, with very little going to them and most of it going to those raising it), but if we dont CHANGE their circumstance.......were really just creating employment for ourselves and continually re-victimizing the victims. Poverty, poverty, poverty.....let me say it again.....POVERTY, is the #1 reason for susceptibility to being trafficked throughout the world. It WILL exact its price! Its a truth when I say: fraud, force and coercion most easily work their magic when vulnerability is spurred by desperation. We believe in the dynamics of Fair Trade because it provides the economic opportunity that David Batstone talks about. Please support ONLY endeavors that provide REAL results (start with the Not For Sale site!). Fair Trade builds the village and then empowers community. As Ive said in the past....SLAVES know theyre enslaved.....they dont need another awareness campaign....they need support in their communities. Lets quit buying airline tickets for sight seeing tours here and abroad and instead invest in futures and break the cycle of exploitation. Its time to go UPSTREAM before meetings cost us another 3 million being enslaved while were having coffee klatches.
