Conquest of Knowledge: HMS Beagle HMS Beagle was a Cherokee-class, 10 gun brig-sloops, of the Royal Navy of Great Britain. It was constructed at a cost of GBP 7,803 in the year 1820. It was principally built for battle. In 1831, it was sent to map coasts of South America, Falkland, and the Galapagos islands, and was prepared for war in the region. The ship had geologists, doctors, surveyors and other scholars. It was commanded by Captain Robert Fitzroy, who was an able leader and a meticulous surveyor. A 22 year old Cambridge graduate and scholar also sailed on this ship’s second voyage. His name was Charles Darwin, the English Naturalist and Geologist. The Theory of Evolution originated on this military expedition. This journey and conception of the Theory of Evolution, was as important for the humanity as the Apollo mission to the Moon on 29th July, 1969. It was truly a marriage between Science and Imperialism.
