Conservatives have their own little delusional buzz phrases they like to throw around to prop up their group hallucinations. One of their favorites is to compare the social safety net to “robbing people at gunpoint, stealing their money, and giving it to lazy people who refuse to work.” We saw a twist on this idea last week. The phrase was “Generosity by proxy is cowardice.” In other words we liberals are cowards because we want a societal infrastructure in place to provide for the least of these and help get them back on their feet if possible. Conservatives want all that to be handled by “the Church,” private charities or individual giving. That’s a pipe dream that will never, ever, ever happen. It’s too big of a problem. It’s going to require a national solution and an ongoing national effort, one which will need to be tweaked frequently as nothing is ever perfect. Conservatives just want the Wild West to prevail. They want all the advantages of living in an organized society but they don’t want to bear any of the costs. There’s another reason they like their proposed system of Church, Charity and Individual Giving. It gives them the ability to determine who “deserves” help and who doesn’t.
