Conservatives plans will result in ‘clunky’ interventions Conservative proposals to give eight regional school commissioners powers to remove teachers and governors have been criticised for failing to address the problem of how to oversee autonomous academies and free schools. The plans, to be included in the party’s manifesto, include the creation of a National Teacher Service staffed by 1,500 top teachers who could be deployed to failing schools. My worry is that this would lead to clunky interventions from a remote commissioner.” Tom Gash at the Institute for Government was also critical calling the national cohort “another move to centralise control of education” which still would not address the “fundamental problems of school accountability that still exist”.
