Consider attending the FREE Iowa Latina/o Education Initiative Conference October 16! REGISTER at the attached link... Via Norma Perez-Kahler, DMACC TRiO SSS Director: "Based on the growth of the Latino population and the impact it is having and will continue to have on Iowa, the conference will focus on critical issues and opportunities the growth of Latinos in Iowa present to the state’s educational systems and all of our educational programs. Last year, the goal of the first Latino Summit was to initiate a collective conversation that would lead to strategies and promising practices, and it was very successful. This year we want to continue that collective conversation among the various constituencies experiencing similar growth and involve as many people throughout the state as possible. In Iowa, only 11% of Latinos age 25 or older have a bachelor’s degree or higher. The total population with a bachelor’s degree or higher is 25.8%. We need to find ways to provide all Iowans with access to college. The conference will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at the FFA Enrichment Center on the DMACC Ankeny campus. The keynote speaker is: Dr. Loui Olivas, President, American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE). The featured speakers are: Dr. Maria Harper-Marinick, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, Maricopa Community Colleges and Dr. Felix Aquino, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Oklahoma City Community College.
