Consider the Vidalia onion. When a consumer picks one up they believe in the quality of the product that is conveyed by the brand. Its sells for more money, more of it is sold, and value added goods market the Vidalia name as part of their brand strategy to increase the bottom line. Farmers in eastern Georgia reap the economic benefits all along the way, just like champagne, bogue sound melons, and authentic parmesan cheese. Can the same be done with a cultivar of Lychee, one of the signature fruits of south Asia? While superior to other varieties of Lychee, it grows best only along Himalayan tributaries of the Ganges river, where yields are 10 times that of the same cultivar grown practically anywhere else in the world. Can impoverished Indian farmers in the region, who make about $75 USD per year (YEAR) be convinced to combine their small farms into agri co-ops to leverage their output on the global market, where lychee goes for $2 per pound? Thank you Kay Huney, a weird offhand conversation about vape flavors just became the nexus of my research proposal :)
