Consider the following- Scotland is debating on going independent from the rest of the United Kingdom. Scotland entered into a union with England in 1707 and they are debating on ending this 307 relationship. Scotland joined with England to form the United Kingdom in exchange for forgiveness of its debts. Scotland had tried to get into the Empire business because it saw its next door neighbor was doing a bang up job with theirs. Scotland set up a colony in Panama called New Caledonia. Scotland couldnt get any financing because all potential lenders were rival Empires. So Scotland took on a lot of debt well over one third of its national wealth. New Caledonia failed horrible. Thousands of Scots died from disease, their wool didnt sell well to the locals who were in tropical weather. Also they were on land already claimed by the Spanish. They eventually took it back by force killing most of the remaining Scots in New Caledonia. Broke and in massive debt which the nation couldnt hope to dig themselves out of England offered them a deal. Join them, and get access to their large Empire and trade networks, and England would pay all their debts to join their alliance. Scotland did well using Englands massive Empire to trade their goods. And even in modern times England subsidizes the Scottish government with aid. But many in Scotland want to leave the UK because their has been oil discovered off Scotlands shore. Many in the movement believe that Scotland is missing out since 95% of the oil is in their territory but England enjoys some of the profits. So many in the movement think that the oil profits will out weigh the benefits they enjoy from the aid that England provides. But there is some who argue that the overseas oil is showing signs it is drying up and Scotland would make a huge mistake by leaving the United Kingdom.
