Consider the following- The SS or Schutzstaffel was not just six foot tall blonde haired blue eyed men. In fact much of the SS wasnt even German. Those with Aryan phenotypes were favored in recruiting but many people of different groups were allowed into the organization. Asians, Arabs, Africans, and many other racial groups served with the German military including the SS. In fact over 60% of the SS during World War 2 were not even ethnic Germans. In the final defense of Berlin most of the SS units defending the city were composed of French, Eastern Europeans, and Russians.Over 30 nations were represented with their own SS units. Not all were combat units many were support, logistics, and one was combat photographers. Albania, Armenia, Belgium, Bugariam, Croatia, Czechoslvakia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, India, Ireland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Indonesia, Russia, Norway, Romania, Serbia, Solvenia, Spanish, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom(mostly POWs who volunteered to join), United States all had citizens who joined SS units during the war. Germany had called all ethnic Germans to join the war effort so this is why many nations with ethnic Germans had some of their citizens join the German military. Also many of the Allied nations like Great Britian had oppressive overseas Empires and many like Indians, Irish, Indonesian may have joined seeing Germany as the enemy of their enemy as an ally. Also Germany had lost interest in overseas Empires after World War I and sought to join Europe under the German state. Germanys SS was composed of so many Russians because many in that nation wanted to fight their Communist government. The German government formed the Free Russian Air Forces which they were the first Russian combat unit to use jet planes. The German government trained and recruited many Russians to fight the Soviets. The Soviet had been oppressive to many ethnic groups within Russain territory fueling many of them to join the German war effort.
