Consider this: In 1971, over a hundred years after Confederation, when multiculturalism was announced as an official policy, the ethnic distribution of the country was: British (44.6%), French (28.7%), German (6.1%), Italian (3.4%), Ukrainian (2.7%), Dutch (2.0% ), Scandinavian (1.8% ), Polish (1.5%), Jewish (1.4%), Other Europe (4.2%), Asian (1.3%), and Aboriginal (1.3). So, as late as 1971, the English and French were over 73% of the population. And the proportion of the population that was ethnically European stood at over 96 percent! The aboriginals were the first people inhabiting this area, but the Anglos and French were clearly the creators of this country; all the institutions, infrastructure, culture, religions, educational curriculum, arts, architecture, everything, were French and Anglo, and from the late 19th century onwards other European peoples came to participate.
