Considerations of Authenticity Are you an authentic person, the real or genuine article? How is ones authenticity as an individual even determined? With millions of views about the perception of an individual and what attributes denote one as authentic, it is difficult to examine and determine whether a person is indeed authentic. We hear the phrases, He is the real deal or They are the genuine article, but in what manner and by whom is this eligibility determined. An article by Alena Hall of the Huffington Post in July of 2014,huffingtonpost/…/genuine-people-traits-authe…, listed signs you live life according to your true self. 1. You have high self-esteem. 2. You embrace vulnerability. 3. You share your true thoughts, beliefs and opinions with the world. 4. You openly give and receive compliments. 5. You really listen -- and prefer deep conversations. 6. Youre driven by an inner voice rather than your surroundings. Supporting her article in part is an article from the Journal of Counseling Psychology entitled The Authentic Personality: A Theoretical and Empirical Conceptualization and the Development of the Authenticity Scale. In the person-centered conception, authenticity is a tripartite construct defined by Barrett-Lennard (1998, p. 82) as involving “consistency between the three levels of (a) a person’s primary experience, (b) their symbolized awareness, and (c) their outward behavior and communication. - personalpages.manchester.ac.uk/…/Authenticity%20Scal… In each of the six points made by Hall, what we find is a struck balance in both the presentation of the individual and their convictions relating to a moral compass and consistency of action relative to their professions. Be confident but not vein. Understand your weaknesses but do not use them as a scapegoat to resist improving them. Share your thoughts and convictions with the world by professing them, but ensure they are morally weighted and supported by the action. One of my favorites -have deep conversations!!! You only start to get to know someone when the conversation goes beyond the weather. Tell me what you think and explain why you do. And, be your own individual. This can only happen once an individual comes to know themselves, understanding how they are influenced and how they derive their personal convictions on their own accord. What are some things that do not contribute to authenticity? Fame, wealth, and even education do not define the authenticity of an individual for all these things are fleeting. When they come and go, you are still left with you and who you truly are to yourself, and your perception to the world. Peruse the article and see if you are truly an authentic individual...
