Considering how much time people waste on their mobile phones already, I hate to recommend yet another game, but QuizUp provides a few minutes of harmless and educational diversion. Whether youre a trivia buff or simply have a great interest in a particular topic, you can challenge friends or strangers to rounds of 10 questions apiece. I just played two rounds of European History against fellow trivia buff and fellow history enthusiast Robert Cruthirds and found the questions quite challenging. Some were rather obvious--e.g., What two countries fought over the Falklands in 1982?--while others required lucky guesses, such as How many Fabergé eggs disappeared in the wake of the Russian Revolution? There are over 500 topics to choose from, covering just about everything imaginable, from sitcoms, to the World Cup, to the Beatles, to literature. If Jennifer Larkin challenged me to a round of pop culture, Id probably get about 2 answers right. If Verlinda Henning and I played, it would probably be the last thing we ever did, and they would find our skeletons, decades from now, with cobwebs growing over them, still clutching our mobile phones. The interesting thing to me, from participating for 10 years now in team trivia events, is that often, people will say Oh, I wouldnt be any good at that, while in fact, they may have considerable knowledge of some niche topic, like 90s sitcoms or country-western singers and might be surprised at how well they would do.
