Construction of Jehangir Chowk Rambagh Expressway Corridor: ‘Commuters not to face inconvenience’: DDC Srinagar Assuring commuters that they in way will face traffic mess in wake of the construction of Jehangir Chowk Rambagh Expressway Corridor (Flyover), District Development Commissioner Engineer Farooq Ahmed Shah Friday said that all the bottlenecks in the form of building structures and vendors will be cleared and a proper route plan will be followed to avoid any traffic mess in the City. In a detailed press conference in which members from civil society, traders federation and journalists were present, District Development Commissioner Er Farooq Ahmed Shah said that work on the Expressway Corridor (Flyover) from Jehangir Chowk to Natipora had been started in September 2013 and it will be completed in August 2016. He said that the said Flyover will be completed at a cost of Rs 352 crores while Rs 98.965 Crores have already been spent on the flyover till January 2014. Giving details about the present scope of work from Sericulture to Solina Bazar, DC Srinagar said that the confirmatory survey of flyover has already been completed while the confirmatory bores for soil testing in all sectors is near completion. He said that in order to avoid traffic chaos, the shoulders of Mehjoor Nagar Bund have already been widened while five security sheds have been relocated. Shah said that there are apprehensions amoung people that Srinagar will face worst of the traffic mess for at least 3 years which is not correct. “We have proper route plan and strategy to deal with the traffic mess and i assure people that they will not face any sort of inconvenience,” he said. Shah said that after the construction of this flyover, the time taken to travel from Jehangir Chowk to Rambagh and vice versa shall be reduced to 2 to 3 minutes as against 20 to 25 minutes at present during peak hours. “There will be overall saving of Rs 20 to 25 crores per annum on account of fuel while the ambient pollution levels will be reduced drastically,” he said adding that traffic coming from Rambagh will continue to ply even during the construction period, however, the traffic coming from Jehangir Chowk will adapt Jawahar Nagar and Rajbagh routes. He said that the plan is foolproof and that there would be no inconvenience to the people and the project will be completed on due date. He said that the road between Bakshi Stadium and Ram Bagh will be closed for traffic. Vehicles driving down from City centre to Ram Bagh, will have to take a left near Bakshi Stadium and then proceed towards Jawahar Nagar to reach Ram Bagh via bund which will be widened. He said government is mulling to construct bailey bridge between Jawahar Nagar and Mehjoor Nagar bunds. “The vehicles coming from Ram Bagh to Jahangir Chowk will be diverted left towards Aloocha Bagh bund where a ramp will be erected near the Women’s Police Station. The vehicles will have to drive down the Silk Factory Road. DC Srinagar said that all the bottlenecks will be cleared to ensure smooth flow of traffic. “The shop line near Batamaloo bus terminal will be relocated. Moreover some two dozen bottlenecks in the form of building structures enroute Firdousabad Batamaloo road that connects with the Teng Pora highway, via Rekha Chowk will be removed,” he said. Farooq Ahmed Shah said that to ensure smooth flow of traffic 285 structures including 225 shops, 56 godowns and 4 offices are required to relocated to some other places. “68 shops needs to be rehabilitated in shopping complex at Rambagh Chowk while 152 structures including shops will be rehabilitated in shopping complex at Jehangir Chowk.
