Consumers who miss out on a high-speed fibre connection to the national broadband network (NBN) will be offered the option to pay thousands of dollars for one when NBN Co rolls out its fibre-on-demand product early next year. The options include a bespoke product for individual homes or businesses, and a co-funding product for councils, communities or local business groups that wish to pool their resources to pay for fibre. Mr Morrow said British Telecoms (BT) wholesale prices for fibre-on-demand would give readers an idea of NBN Cos pricing model in Australia. Telecommunications analyst Paul Budde said while some cashed-up Australians or businesses might be willing to pay thousands of dollars for high-speed fibre, the onus would largely be on local councils and business groups to be proactive in pooling resources to foot the bill. As soon as you are five kilometres, 10 kilometres or 20 kilometres out of a residential area or a regional town you are in trouble, basically - unless youre prepared to pay ... $20,000 or $40,000, Mr Budde said.
