After 25 years of winemaking and close to 1000 medals earned, Alto Vineyards continues to distinguish our region with a Governor’s Cup for its Vidal Blanc, the designator for the premier white wine produced from Illinois grapes, and 6 Gold medals including 3 Double Gold awards in the Illinois State Fair Wine competition and 5 Gold medals in the Michigan Great Lakes Great Wine Competition. In both competitions, Alto Vineyards received the highest number of Gold medals awarded, in addition to earning 10 Silver and nine Bronze medals. Alto continues to be judged among the best of the best in the Midwest’s burgeoning wine industry. Paul Renzaglia, owner and winemaker of Alto Vineyards says, “The (Shawnee Hills) AVA brings another dimension to help validate our region as a unique and viable growing area in the United States. Grapes from the Shawnee Hills can be comparable to Napa Valley or any well-known region, and has the potential to push Southern Illinois wine to new levels of respect throughout the winemaking world.” The Illinois State Fair Wine Competition selects the best wines made from Illinois fruit. Judges used blind evaluation of all wines using a 20-point score card, assigning points for color, aroma, palate, finish, and overall impression. These point totals result in Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, as well as best of class designations. All the Gold-medal winning wines are then considered for top awards, including Best of Show and Governor’s Cup trophies for Illinois-grown red, white, rosé, fruit, and dessert/sparkling wines. The Oakland Community College Great Lakes Great Wine Competition is in its 17th year. The competition is unique because it features only the wines of states and Canadian provinces that border the Great Lakes. This year, however, to increase the lineup, other Midwest states including Kentucky and Virginia were invited to participate.
