Maryland Republicans in the House and Senate repeatedly tried to get an up or down vote on this issue, but the Democrats would not let the vote more forward. Diana Waterman, Chairman of the Maryland Republican Party commented, “While salaries of the average Marylander have gone down or stayed stagnant, the Democrat legislators feel they are entitled to a huge pay raise.” She continued “The nerve of them not to even vote on the issue leads me to believe they want to hide behind a recommendation of a committee instead of showing courage and voting for these hypocritical raises.” Waterman also stated, “The people of Maryland deserve legislators who are able to make tough decisions. In a time of fiscal uncertainty for many Marylanders, they should have voted against any recommended increase in salary.” She continued, “With 74 new taxes and fees placed on the working Marylanders to fill budget gaps, the Democrat-controlled House and Senate appear to have no reservations about giving themselves a pay raise, and that is wrong.” Under Maryland law, a legislative commission recommends salary increases for legislators. They take effect automatically unless legislators vote to reject them.
