Contemplating todays Gospel Liturgical Day : Friday XXXII Ordinary Time Gospel text ( Lk 17 , 26-37 ) : At that time Jesus said to his disciples : As in the days of Noah , so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. Eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, the flood came and destroyed them all . The same , as in the days of Lot : they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, but on the day Lot left Sodom , it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all . The same will happen on the Day when the Son of man is revealed . That day , which is on the housetop , with his possessions at home, not go down to pick them , and likewise, which is in the field not turn back. Remember Lots wife . Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save . I tell you, on that night there shall be two in one bed : one will be taken and the other left two women will be grinding together : one will be taken and the other left . And I said, Where, Lord ? . He replied, Where the body is, there the vultures will gather . Word of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus. Comment: Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save Today , the predominant context of a materialistic culture , many act as in Noahs time , eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage ( Lk 17, 27 ) , or like Lot s contemporaries that ( ... ) buying, selling , they planted , they built (Lk 17, 28 ) . With a vision so myopic , the supreme aspiration of many comes down to your own temporary physical life and therefore every effort that aims to preserve life, protect and enrich . In the Gospel passage we are discussing , Jesus wants to step out of this fragmented conception of life that cripples the human being and leads to frustration. And what would make a judgment and strong , capable of removing consciences and compel the fundamental questions : Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it (Lk 17, 33 ) . Meditating on this teaching of Jesus Christ , says St. Augustine: What, then? ? Perish all who do these things , that is, those who marry , plant vineyards and build ? Not them , but those who boast of those things , those who put these things to God , who are willing to offend God by such things instantly . In fact , who loses his life for having wanted to keep but one who has lived exclusively in the flesh, leaving the spirit emerge , or even more , one who lives absorbed , completely ignoring others? It is evident that life in the flesh necessarily be lost , and life in the spirit , if not shared , it weakens . All life , by itself, tends naturally to growth, the exuberance , the fruiting and reproduction. Conversely , if the kidnapped and the shuts in the attempt to possess greedy and exclusively , withers , and dies sterilized . For this reason , all the saints , on the model of Jesus , who lived intensely for God and men , have given generously of their life multiform ways to serve God and his fellowmen.
