River Ganga enters the North Indian plains at Haridwar. Haridwar or Gateway to Gods is also known by the names of Mayapuri, Kapila and Gangadwar. Hindu pilgrims and devotees gather at Haridwar to offer prayers on auspicious occasions. The water of River Ganga is considered so sacred at Haridwar that pilgrims carry back the water from the Ganga. It is believed that Haridwar has been sanctified by the presence of three Gods: Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Devout believers feel that they will attain salvation and go to heaven after a dip in the sacred Ganga at Haridwar. Haridwar is also one of the four venues of the Kumbh Mela (occurring after a rotation of every twelve Years) and Ardh Kumbh (after every six years). According to mythology drops of Amrit (Elixir) fell in to the Brahmkund of Har-Ki-Pairi, therefore a dip in the Brahmakund on this particular day is considered very auspicious. Haridwar has not only remained the abode of the holy men and saints but also served as a center of attraction for many, for learning the arts, science and culture. Haridwar is not only religiously important but also has industrial importance as it has one of the biggest industrial clusters of Uttaranchal- SIDCUL. Haridwar also has one of the most prestigious engineering institutes of India- the Roorkee University (now an IIT). History of Haridwar According to Hindu belief, Haridwar is the land that was sanctified by the footprints of the Lord. Associated with both Shiva and Vishnu, it is believed to have been the place where Sati (Shiva’s consort) consigned herself to the sacrificial fire. The terrible ‘Tandava’ (dance of destruction) performed by Shiva in grief led to Vishnu dismembering Sati’s body, with the different parts scattering across India. Besides its pre-eminence in Hindu texts, Haridwar’s claim to fame is its mention by the Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang and its invasion by the plundering troops of Timur Lame. The Har Ki Pauri ghat, said to be built by Vikaramaditya to the memory of his brother Bhartrihari, is one of the most sacred places in not only Haridwar, but also India. The Maha Aarti performed every evening here is a must see for any visitor. Chandi Devi and Mansa Devi, two temples situated at trekking distance from the city are also well worth a visit. The ancient temple of Maya Devi is dedicated to Sati, the spouse of Lord Shiva who immolated herself to preserve his honour and is one of the major Shakthipeeths. Four kms from Haridwar is the Daksha Mahadev temple built in honour of Satis father, King Daksha Prajapati. Legend has it that King Daksha displeased with his daughters marriage to Lord Shiva did not invite them to a yagya. Sati, who went nonetheless, was insulted by her father and unable to bear it burnt herself alive. Daksha was killed by Shivas followers and later brought back to life by Shiva. The temple commemorates this event and is one of the five sacred places in Haridwar. Finally a visit to Haridwar would be incomplete without a look at the Gurukul Kangri University to experience the gurukul system first-hand. Haridwar is not only about temples. It has a great deal on offer for nature lovers as well. At one spot the Ganga divides into seven small streams called the Sapt Rishi, which provides the visitor with a vision of beauty. Neel Dhara Pakshi Vihar is an excellent point to watch for migratory birds of which the Siberian Crane is the most illustrious visitor to these shores. Once at Uttaranchal region, you wouldnt want to go away without journeying the other tourist attractions that are at an easy distance from Haridwar. Fests of Haridwar The religious and fun loving people of Haridwar celebrate and observe many religious festivals in the city. The fairs and festivals in Haridwar reflect the residents religious inclination, dedication, respect and amiable side. Kumbh mela Haridwar is known for hosting one of the biggest fairs in India. Kumbh Mela attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world. The most important part of the mela is to a holy dip on the banks of the rivers to wash away the sins committed in the lifetime. The astrological timing of Kumbha-mela at Haridwar is when Jupiter is in Aquarius and the Sun is in Aries. There are several major bathing days, which fall on auspicious days and festivals, such as Shivratri, Amavasya and the Maha Kumbha day (the biggest day). The Kumbh mela is held in every 12 years to commemorate this spiritual day .Millions of men, women, children, sagas, Rishi, Munies, baba’s and tourists gather here to take a dip in the holy water of the holy rivers, the cycle of reincarnation. The main bathing place is at Hari-ki-Pairi and bathing begins early in the morning and goes to around 11:30 am. At this time, Hari-ki-Pairi is closed so the Sadhus can take bath from around 12 noon to 2 pm. After this, it is open again for general public. Ardh Kumbh The Ardh Kumbh mela (fair) is held in every 6 years which is followed by the Kumbh Mela after 6 years. It is believed that a dip in the holy river Ganga during the Ardh Kumbh gives one Moksha or Nirvana. Diwali & Holi Every Hindu festival is celebrated with lot of enthusiasm and joy. The whole city is decorated with lights and diyas during the festival. The reflection of those lights in the river Ganga makes this place like a conglomeration of stars on the earth. Best Time to Visit The city of Haridwar is situated in the planes of Uttarakhand state and is located in the foot of Shivalik ranges. It is in Haridwar that the Ganga leaves the mountains and starts it journey in the planes. The climate of Haridwar is considerably affected by its proximity to the Himalayan ranges especially the dipping mercury in winter months is a result of this. The city of Haridwar enjoys extreme climate.
