Continuing Chapter 42 of Genesis... After Joseph accuses his brothers of being spies, they plead with him that they just want to buy food, and that they are honest men. But Joseph stands firm, insisting that they are indeed spies from Canaan, here to scout the land to see how vulnerable Egypt is. And his brothers continue to plead with Joseph, that they are all brothers, twelve in all, from a man living in Canaan where their youngest brother is with their father, but one brother is no longer with them. Finally Joseph challenges his brothers to test their story. He tells them that he will throw them all in prison, but allow one of them to return to Canaan to bring back their younger brother to confirm the story, that they are not spies. And with that, Joseph throws all of his brothers in prison for three days. Then on the third day, Joseph releases his brothers and tells them that he will let all of them go home with grain for their starving families, but he will keep one of them in prison until they can return with their younger brother to confirm that they are not spies. To this, the brothers agree, and they grumble amongst themselves, that clearly they are being punished by what they did to Joseph long ago. When Joseph hears his brothers remorse for what they did to him, he turns away and begins to weep, but regains his composure before talking to them again. The brothers decided to leave Simeon and Joseph has him tied up right before their eyes.
