Continuing Woes in Tonga Sports After Tasanoc experienced chaotic conditions for weeks on end, with a corruption scandal raging that saw top positions axed, the proud Sport Nation of Tonga’s team arrived at the Mini Games with the largest number of functionaries of any country! Even the organizers couldn’t but wryly proclaim at the opening ceremony: “Tonga: 47 athletes; 18 officials!” With the Games proceeding it didn’t quite hit anyone as a surprise though, that the Tongan team, with the rare exception of Decathlon winner Toutouofa Vea, ended up by far the competition’s biggest underperformer, barely managing to bypass such ‘nations’ as Norfolk & Micronesia. In general the athletes seemed less dynamic, simply less well trained than their competitors. Maybe it’s time even for Tonga to open up a bit to the modern world where often training methods from overseas have been more tested, refined & effective over the years. Ps: at least the ‘Friendly’ Shipping Company with their ‘Otuanga Ofa’ made good business. When learning that the Tuvalu ship had problems, they ruthlessly exploited their dilemma, charging an outrageous ten-fold 1000$ AU per athlete one-way! Tuvalu team members who in time decided to book a flight ticket paid only a third of that! As a comparison, 1499$ AU buys you a 28-day luxury cruise half-around-the-planet from Chile to Sydney
