Continuing a busy post Christmas day period for the team, today we were called to three incidents. Incident 109 - Sunday 28th December 2014 13:28hrs Team members called to Bingham Park, Ecclesall, Sheffield to assist Yorkshire Ambulance Service with a sledging accident. A 15 year old girl had collided with a tree, landing on her back in a hedge. Unable to move due to a leg injury, friends alerted 999. Fortunately the Paramedic that arrived is also our Team Leader, after assessing the injuries it was apparent that she had a nasty fracture of her femur. Recognising the teams expertise would be the only safe way of getting the girl to the ambulance, the team were requested. Strong analgesia was administered, her leg was splinted and she was then placed on a Mountain Rescue stretcher and ironically sledged down the hill to the ambulance. Incident 110 - Sunday 28th December 2014 13:39hrs Whilst responding to incident 109, the team was contacted regarding a further incident near Mam Tor, Castleton. Buxton Mountain Rescue Team were also responding to this incident. Those members not responding to Sheffield were sent to Castleton. A 70 year old male had been walking with his family up to Mam Tor summit when he began to feel unwell. He was treated on scene by team medics and assisted back to the road. On arrival back at the car, he was discharged by one of the team doctors and returned home with his family. Incident 111 - Sunday 28th December 2014 16:37hrs The team were contacted for their third incident of the day. A group of four teenagers had been on Stanage Edge, unfortunately one of them had fallen from Robin Hoods Cave, landing approx 7m below. The casualty, a 14 year old male was reported as suffering from leg injuries. Due to fading light, conditions locally and the possibility of significant injuries, an early decision was made to request the assistance of an RAF Seaking helicopter. First team members arrived at site, which had been illuminated by the group, enabling team members to locate quickly. On examination, it was discovered he had possibly fractured some ribs and had open fractures to both lower legs. He was given advanced analgesia and sedation by a team doctor, his legs were then splinted by team members before he was sledged down to the car park at Hooks Car. By this time the Seaking had arrived, the male was loaded in to the helicopter and flown to Sheffield accompanied by the doctor. He was then transferred to the Childrens Major Trauma Centre for emergency surgery.
