Continuing my posts on hitting, biting, pinching, etc.: They key to helping your child with autism to overcome using behaviors such as kicking, hitting, or biting people is to make sure everyone who interacts with your child uses the same techniques. Help everyone react calmly and confused when your child hits and to instead give a big excited reaction to language, gestures, and using coping strategies. If even one person gives a big reaction, moves to solve the problem quickly, or gives in if its a boundary than we are teaching that this behavior works and your child may persist in using it with others. Also, your child may initially increase the behaviors as they are trying to figure it out. If these behaviors have worked in the past to get them something or help them than perhaps they will increase the frequency or strength to see if that will then work. Stay strong, hold on to the knowledge that if you can outlast your child you will be helping them with a very important life skill. Check out my previous posts on this topic, and if I can assist you with specific techniques, your first 30 min consult is free!
