Continuing pilgrimage from Croagh Patrick and Kildare, Ireland to the island of Iona, Scotland. From there hoping to make it to St. Andrews... May take a detour to try to see Nessie the lock ness monster. lol! It is said to have been first written about in the biography of St. Columba who landed in Iona, Scotland in 563. St. Columba was a monk from Ireland and a contemporary of St. Brigid of Kildare. The island of Iona is one of the most sacred places in Scotland. The book of Kells, the illustrated manuscript of the four gospels now housed in Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, was developed here AND so was the Celtic Cross. The circle part of the cross was merely a functional element of the cross trying to hold the heavy stone arms of the first large erected crosses. From there artist began to depict the crosses in the same manner.
