Continuing the walk-through of my picks for best metal albums of 2014 (as submitted to Hellbound.ca for year end polling -- coming soon to a series of tubes near you). A caveat: Please dont take Óttas place at #6 as indicative of some damning lack or petty disqualifying factor on the part of SÓLSTAFIR. Rather, this curiously low ranking for what is, paradoxically, a triumphant achievement, is merely a tribute to how good a year 2014 was for metal. Because make no mistake: Ótta is not only brilliantly conceived and performed; it also perfectly establishes and maintains its novel concept, engaging theme and all-encompassing mood, weaving an entrancing 8 song set into a cohesive, inseparable whole far greater than the sum of its parts. Shorter: SÓLSTAFIR have crafted a damn good record. Indeed, Ótta is one of the years best (natch). And thats especially noteworthy (even in a good year) in a market so oversaturated with disposable digital ephemera.
