Contract Signed for Phase 2 of the 1.6 Million Dollar Savanne Water Supply in Scotts Head Roseau, Dominica – Friday, October 3, 2014 – The Dominica Water and Sewerage Company, DOWASCO and Caribbean Contractors Limited have signed a contract for the construction of Phase 2 Savanne Water Supply Project in Scotts Head. The contract was signed at a short ceremony at the Caribantic Hall in Scotts Head on Thursday, October 2, 2014. Minister for Housing, Lands, Settlements and Water Resource Management Honourable Reginald Austrie said that Government took note of the water issues affecting not only Savanne but the entire community of Scotts Head. Minister Austrie said residents of Savanne will soon no longer have to endure an inconsistent supply of water. “The entire project seeks to eliminate the occurrence of low water pressure and water shortage in the upper part of Scotts Head known as Savanne, and allow for future housing development expansion in that area. The provision of storage will also allow for improved water service reliability to the whole of Scotts Head,” Minister Austrie stated. Phase 2 of the Savanne Water Supply Project is in keeping with the Dominica Labour Party Government’s policy to ensure 100% of communities across Dominica are provided with potable water from DOWASCO’s systems by 2015. Minister Austrie is delighted to know that Government’s policy is well ahead of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals. “Many countries around the world continue to struggle to meet the Millennium Development Goal of providing potable water for 50% of their population by 2015, but our Government has been able to invest millions in the water sector over the past few years, to ensure that all Dominicans can enjoy the benefits of having access to water at their homes or from stand pipes near their homes,” Minister Austrie stated. Minister Austrie called on residents to cooperate fully with the contractor as he undertakes the project. Phase 2 sees the construction of a thirty thousand (30,000) imperial gallon circular concrete storage tank in Crabier; construction of a pump house and sump tank on the premises of the old primary school; installation of two electrical pumps and electrical works; purchase of land for tank construction; installation of two thousand five hundred feet (2,500ft) of three inch (3”) HDPE supply and distribution pipelines to and from the storage tank to the pump house; and the installation of one thousand six hundred feet (1600ft) of schedule 40 PVC washout piping for proper draining of the storage tank. Phase 2 of the project will cost approximately eight hundred thousand dollars ($8000, 000.00) and will be completed in three to four months. Phase 1 included the replacement of six thousand eight hundred feet (6,800ft) of pumping line and seven thousand two hundred feet (7,200ft) of gravity fed line. Phase 1 cost over eight hundred and twenty thousand dollars ($820,000). The overall cost of the Savanne Water Supply Project is one million six hundred and twenty thousand eight hundred and twelve dollars ($1,620,812.00) provided by the Government of Dominica.
