Contrary to belief, Jesus was an amusing guy. Okay, maybe not in a showbiz way, but worth stopping to watch. He walked on water, raised the dead, and healed diseases. Those miracles got him noticed. If he just told stories, not as many people would have paid attention, but his parables were superb comments of common life used to clarify the sacred. He talked about where, and how, people lived – farming, fishing, travel, and taxes. He talked about life. His way with words provoked the mind and stirred the soul, and made people laugh. He was a master storyteller who used levity to point to heaven. “Why worry about a speck in your friends eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying, Hey, let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye, when you cant see past your own log? First, get rid of the log from your eyes; then perhaps you’ll see well enough to deal with the speck in your friends eye.” Come on. Use your imagination. It’s funny. Jesus was saying you’ve got a stove-length log stuck in front of your eyes, blocking your view, while you delicately try to daintily flick a fleck out of your neighbor’s eye. Imagine this on film with Laurel and Hardy, or the Three Stooges, or on Saturday Night Live. It’s funny, but it tells the truth – don’t judge others. Let’s Pray: Dear God, thank You for humor in our lives. Thanks for letting Jesus tell the truth with humor. Amen. Here’s a Thought: Jesus was a funny guy.
