Controversy on GWs campus today with the announcement of Jose - TopicsExpress

Controversy on GWs campus today with the announcement of Jose Andres as this years commencement speaker. Its pretty clear that GW wants to get away from just having political power players give commencement speeches when the University has so much more to offer. The groans were aplenty when it was announced that Kerry Washington was giving the speech last year, as if to chide her as just that bimbo from Scandal. But our alumna (CCAS 98) gave a fabulous speech. IF there is one thing I know about, its food. Jose Andres is easily one of the best chefs in the world. Dont believe me? Head down to Penn Quarter and go to Jaleo. Go ask Tony Bourdain or Eric Ripert or Daniel Bouloud, what they think of Andres. They bow at his feet as a matter of all things culinary. Its been said that if you [h]ang around with Andrés long enough and youll be convinced that chefs are the new superheroes, able to dazzle diners, jump-start economies and broker world peace with a wave of the tongs. Not only can he make youre stomach happy, but your heart as well. Hes fought against, obesity, unnecessary food subsidies, he started World Central Kitchen in Haiti, and is actively fighting food deserts and malnutrition throughout the world. Hes also taught classes at Harvard and GW about the importance of food as a force of social activism. Hes a highly engaging guy and I am excited to hear what he has to say.
