Conventional wisdom says elections define democracy. As a corollary, anything that upends the electoral result is considered undemocratic. The world has come to accept this largely western notion of what constitutes the most democratic manner of selecting a leader. This has been embedded into our consciousness so often that we hardly weigh its alternatives… Events in Egypt have approached this nuanced coloration where protests approached a legitimacy at parity with that afforded the electoral process. Thus, it would be too mechanistic to simply dismiss the overthrow of Morsi as an undemocratic coup. Given the lack of political avenues by which to check Morsi’s power, this might have been the last, best and only resort to avert greater calamity. It is too soon to make a decisive conclusion either way. Only time and subsequent events will determine whether this was an act of desperate, republican bravery or one of utmost folly and disaster. - Brian Browne
