Conversation my father had with a cop friend as they were driving through a town in California... My father mentions out of curiosity: Hm, Im sure you guys focus in on a lot black people when you make arrests around here... Cop: Yeah... well, most times we find something, Derrick. If you look hard enough for something, youll find it. I guarantee you if you decided to venture out into the suburbs one day, and decide to randomly search people, you would find ample amounts of people with cocaine (a drug predominantly used in the suburbs, but seen as less of a threat or heavy, of course, than the crack you would find in poorer neighborhoods). You would find people speeding a few miles over the speed limit as well, as anyone does, and youll find other things like prostitution and etc, which some suburbs are notorious for. The fact that some cops will look for something with the idea that they will find it predominantly and solely within one race of people is primitive... ludicrous, doltish? I dont even know how to describe an idea so simple minded. The fact that my father will get repeatedly pulled over in contrast to his coworkers who never have this experience, is not okay. The fact that my brother can throw on a pair of sweatpants and hoodie, and instantly be viewed as intimidating is not okay. You may not be a black male growing up in this country, and you may even have your reservations with the verdict of the Mike Brown case, but you cant simply sweep these apparent issues under the rug by trying to demonize the deceased... if thats truly what you believe, then what do you have to say for the countless similar occurrences of extremely excessive police brutality on people just like that of Mike Brown? You cant excuse every situation and sooner or later youll have to wake up and realize the problems that this country has been facing for years. Be a part of the solution, not the problem.
