Cook Islands Vacations > Things to do on Atiu Things to do on Atiu There are plenty of things to do on Atiu to keep you busy for quite a few days. Fishing is serious business on the island and is not only a source of income for many but is also a sign of prestige that a man can support his family. However, for tourists, fishing is fun day or night. The reef around Atiu is home to many fish species including flying fish, which is usually caught at night! An organized tour is the best way to see Atiu and is a fun way to meet people and have a good time while you are here. There are various organized tours on Atiu including Atiu Tours, Papa Moe and George Mateariki all of which offer varied trips and excursions to enjoy. Paiere Mokoroa is a retired historian and is a great person to talk to, if you want to know more about the history of this lovely island. He will also take you to various historical sites across Atiu for a minimal fee. Shopping on Atiu The shopping on Atiu is very good with numerous places to buy some interesting handmade arts and crafts. The tapa on Atiu is of a good quality and is worth buy here. For some lovely tapa flowers visit the Center Store, Maara Ngaroi and Maara Marama. Ngere Tariu sells wonderful hand carved Tangaroa figures, while Punua Tauraa sells beautiful handcrafted ukuleles from there homes. Atiu Entertainment Atiu has two places that are worth visiting on a Friday and Saturday night to have some fun. Kura’s Kitchen and the Atiu Nui Maruarua Hall are both excellent places to go dancing. For a more quiet end to your day, visit some of the many places to eat on the island. Kura’s Kitchen and the Akai Bakery are good places to eat at. While you are here don’t forget to try the local delicacy, Maroro or flying fish.
