Cooking with Odyssey Nursery Cooking is not only a fun, engaging activity for children, but one that has been used for years as an important teaching and development tool for children of all ages. At Odyssey we incorporate our cooking activities as part of our theme based educational program. These activities enhance all areas of development with emphasis on Language Development. Learning new words for items in the kitchen or different ingredients is a great way to introduce new vocabulary. Other areas of development that are stimulated through our cooking classes are: Personal, Social & Emotional Development - Cooking helps children develop their self-esteem and confidence in their skills and abilities. Communication and Language Development - Following a recipe can encourage independence, while also teaching children to follow instructions and use problem solving skills to complete tasks. Physical Development – Chopping, squeezing, spreading, and mixing are all skills that help develop a child’s fine motor skills (small muscle control) and eye-hand coordination. Mathematics – Cooking inspires children’s curiosity, thinking, and problem solving, offering new opportunities to make predictions and observations. Additionally, cooking offers authentic opportunities for students to understand and apply their knowledge of measuring, one-to-one correspondence, numbers, and counting.
