Cool new research: Using ancestral state reconstruction and custom mutagenesis, these researchers from the University of Tokyo reconstructed the putative universal ancestral nucleoside diphosphate kinase, i.e. the one that was present at the origin of bacteria, and found that the ancestral version of the enzyme is well-suited to high temperatures. This is one of the first direct evidences for the origin of life taking place somewhere really hot, like a hydrothermal vent. Or, to be completely charitable, the origin of "modern" cells, or the origin of the only remaining kingdoms of life. If you are using my post on the origin of life (bioteaching.wordpress/2011/05/27/the-origin-of-life-and-of-the-atmosphere/), then be sure to mention this new paper in the relevant part as well!
