The iconic company last year celebrated its 90th anniversary of ice-cream creation, but its roots go back to the late 1800s when it started making ice. Golden North moved into dairy products in 1923, and has been creating mouth-watering treats ever since. Operations manager Les Beyer says the business has 60 staff at Laura, making it the towns largest employer, and 10 in its Adelaide office. We supply to every state in Australia but SA supermarkets are our main market, he said. We also supply to the food service and catering industry Australia-wide. Golden North is a regular entrant in the Royal Adelaide Show dairy section, and has won a swag of awards in the past. Les says the company is completely Australian-owned and uses only the freshest milk and cream, focusing on local supply, with milk from the Blyth area. A local bee-keeper provides the honey for its much-loved honey ice-cream. We try to keep everything as local as we possibly can, he said. Golden North produces 10 million litres of ice-cream a year. Although SA is its largest market, the company also supplies WA catering businesses.
