Coolamine Homestead located in Kosciusko National Park off Long - TopicsExpress

Coolamine Homestead located in Kosciusko National Park off Long Plains Road was first settled in 1882 by the Southwell family who built a two room house of wooden slabs with a shingle roof! A sleep out and two verandas were added in 1890! It was originally a grazing property and remained so until the early 1900s. A friend, Frederick Campbell of Duntroon built the second cabin in 1892 due to his frequent visits to Coolamine! The cheese hut was built in 1892, but fell into disrepair and was re built in 1983! The original thatched roof remains under the corrugated iron roof! The original kitchen burned down in 1919 and was replaced by the corrugated iron building still standing today! Over the years the roofs of all the buildings were replaced by corrugated iron, but some wooden shingles remain underneath! The interior walls were lined with old newspapers and made for interesting reading until vandals started tagging the walls and ceilings! Some still remain but not many! The buildings are now maintained by the National Parks & Wildlife service and campers can stay overnight for emergency accommodation only! No fires are allowed within the buildings for obvious reasons! The site is Heritage listed!
