Cooley took over the Ann Arbor location of the Ava Maria Law - TopicsExpress

Cooley took over the Ann Arbor location of the Ava Maria Law School when it headed for warmer and more conservative climes. It is my understanding that Cooley is hemorrhaging money and is trying to stave the arterial bleed by buying out the contracts of its senior professors, cutting deans, and making them all teach. (I did not hear this from the source of this article, by the way.) The Dean of the Law School has alienated the faculty so much with his fiscal decisions that he rarely comes to full faculty meetings anymore, due to the warm welcome he would receive. Finally, if a Prof gives more than two Fs in any section, their entire grades will be reviewed by their superiors. Clearly this measure was taken to inflate grades and keep otherwise poor performing students at the school. Concerning admissions, grades and graduation from Cooley, the saying used to be, At other law schools, it is an honor to be accepted. At Cooley, it is an honor to graduate. My class started off with almost a thousand and we were down to less than 300 by the time I graduated. If someone wanted to try law school, they would let them, but if they could not cut the mustard, they pretty much were flunked out by the second or third semester. At least that way, they were not in such deep debt. The bar pass rates were as high as U of M and M State and typically beat Detroit Mercy. Now......... not so much. Of my favorite full time tenured faculty, all of them have or are in the process of leaving. They were tough graders and thought nothing of humiliating an unprepared student. They were also consummately fair, learned about the subject material, and they all did their best to make some very dry material at least palatable by using real world examples. They actually kept their office hours and I even had a prof who met me in another City to go over some questions I had because it was closer for me. Lord only knows what is happening there now. Fortunately, none of my clients ask or care what law school I went to, because they know I am giving them concierge service, compared to how the system has usually treated them in the past.
