Copied from another rescues post about why we cant respond to all - TopicsExpress

Copied from another rescues post about why we cant respond to all (or even MOST of our requests to help): *WARNING: This is a LONG post, but it thoroughly explains something that I think many dont fully understand* This evening, I would like to try and explain another small part of rescue, and why things happen the way they do. Leaders in rescue often are tagged in posts, where someone has made a status saying how they need help. Usually, this posts calls out for a rescue to take a dog/cat immediately. The friends on Facebook of this person tag rescue leaders and wait for one of them to ride in on a white horse to say I will take the dog or cat. Unfortunately, that rarely happens. Here is why. Rescue leaders/managers get tagged A LOT. People often tag us and get irritated when we cant take the dog or cat, and after 5 or 6 times of this happening, they get frustrated and stop tagging/donating/etc. What the person tagging us doesnt see is the flood of requests we deal with on a daily basis. Now, lets say in theory that a rescue averages an adoption a day, which is pretty accurate for several locally. On any given day, we have likely received 3-4 personal Facebook messages, a phone call or two, 3-4 more messages on our rescues page, 2-3 emails, and maybe even an email to our personal account. Now that, just the general public, is 10-14 people requesting we take in an animal. Notice the key word: people. Many times, one person will request we take in 2, 3, even 5 animals. What you REALLY dont see, is what we see when we walk into an animal control facility. Every kennel is often filled, with the shelter managers trying to decide which 10, or 15, or 25 dogs and cats to euthanize today to make room for the 10-25 dogs and cats that will inevitably come in tomorrow. They dont want to euthanize those dogs and cats, so they ask the managers/leaders to try and take even just one, so they dont get put down. So at the end of the day, when we go to bed, we have have 1 space open. At the same time, we have 10-14 people requesting we take in their dog(s) or cat(s), plus we think about all the animals that will lose their life at Caddo, Bossier, Desoto, and Sabine Animal Controls tomorrow if a rescue doesnt take them. After you decide which 1 animal you will take, you get up the next morning, and you do the exact same thing. Day in, and day out, it never ends. Its rare that your mind doesnt think about the animals you couldnt save, or that you dont have room for. So if youre one of those that tag, dont be discouraged, dont stop supporting, but remember, the person you are talking to is making tough decisions that many in the world would not want to make. I hope this was insightful and not to overwhelming!
