Copied from the SMH Labels have purpose Paul Bugeja (Letters, 4/1), all food certification labelling is not the same. The halal label means the animal may have died in prolonged agony. Having been brought up on a farm I know what throat-cutting looks like and how long it takes for the animal to bleed out. Although most halal-processed animals have been pre-stunned, a number of halal abattoirs have a government exemption from this requirement and there is no differentiation in the labelling. I support primary producers efforts to extend their markets, but not if this entails giving tacit approval to needless cruelty. I support free-range egg labelling for the same reason. As a coeliac I depend upon the gluten-free label to protect my health and there is an obvious public interest value in other health-based labelling. Denmark has banned all traditional halal and kosher religious slaughter. We should do the same. Patrice McCarthy, Fitzroy North
