Coppers Bluff H felts/Sophia’s lover A little branch divides the fields Cuts deeper then between the hills Then winds and joins another one Between the ridges where the sun Is forbidden by tall trees To heat at all the little breeze That plays along the silver stream Where children laugh, and shout and dream For down this canyon cool and deep So many times have splashed the feet Of rowdy farm boys, rough and tough All headed down to Coppers Bluff Sunday on a summer’s day Cousins gather round to play And sure as daytime follows night Someone suggest that we just might Have on our hands time enough To head on down to Coppers Bluff So off we’d go, our little band Adventures in a magic land Down the stream until it’d stop Then fifty feet or so it’d drop Thus with childhood friends at play I often spent the Sabbath Day The little stream, it twist around It runs along, it drops on down Noted landmarks on the way Mark good spots to splash and play Rock to rock jump agile feet Avoiding holes and rocks too steep A fallen tree-bridge here and there To duck, or walk it if you dare Then the steps, high enough Angled some night quiet a bluff Then just around a bend or two Coopers Bluff burst into view So many times while still a boy I journeyed there in carefree joy And I don’t know a traveler yet Who’s made it there without some wet Just a slip on slippery slate A jump too short or splash by mate And always serpents watching you We have killed a snake or two The little journey, bout a mile Was counted more than worth the while Endured like men each bump and scuff When destiny was Coppers Bluff There we’d gather round the ledge The braver ones right at the edge Face to face mortality A youthful tease at destiny Sparkling water pure and cool Forever fills a crystal pool It widens there, the little stream And gives the sun just room to beam Through silver mist that drifts away Like spirit parting from the clay Awed I’d gaze in boyish wonder Mystic view with days to ponder Still in the stream a mortal man Above the ledge I soon will stand Pools I’ve jumped and logs I’ve walked Friends I’ve made and laughed and talked Down the steps I fell and slid It’d take a life for all I did The bluff in view I’ve passed the bend And soon my little dream will end No more meandering round the ledge The time is come to slip the edge Soon destiny’s iron hand will rule I’ll quit the stream, for the silver pool Copyright: Meditations on Eternity / by Sophia’s lover. 2001
