Copy of my letter to the editor of the Tulsa World sent today: I am a public school teacher in Oklahoma with 20 years of teaching experience. I am writing to urge voters to choose Dr. John Cox for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. During my teaching career, I have seen a sad transformation of public schools. They were once families of professional educators who helped students learn the skills to succeed in work and life. Now, they are testing factories desperately trying to turn students into robotic test takers to fit standards that we and our communities had no role in creating. Dr. Cox wants educational professionals and communities to be at the forefront of the transformation of Oklahoma schools into a model for the nation. The reform movement in education is led by those who want to profit from our taxpayer dollars. Rejecting these reforms will allow us to spend our hard earned taxpayer dollars on the classroom, and keep our money in Oklahoma rather than giving it to out of state vendors like Pearson, a British company. Mrs. Hofmeister’s undefined “eight year plan” worries me. That and her pledge to look to other states for guidance and bring in “experts” is clearly an allusion to continued misguided reform.
