Cord blood banking is an interesting concept. People see it as banking for the future. However i always have to wonder about the disadvantages of the baby not receiving their own stem cells. As midwives we promote the benefit of allowing the cord to stop pulsating . In the case of cord banking the cord is clamped and blood withdrawn as soon as possible - to get the best harvest. Will this be of long term disadvantage for the child? Does the childs circulating stem cells actually protect them from the occurrence of cancers and such like illness in the future? Cord blood banking feels a bit like ambulance at the bottom of the hill stuff to me.What do you think?
