Cordillera de la Sal The Cordillera de la Sal (Mountain Range of the Salt) is located 70 km from Calama, 2 km west from San Pedro de Atacama and 318 km southeast from Antofagasta. The name Cordillera de la Sal comes from the fact that its rocks have a great amount of calcium sulphate, which gives them an aspect of being splashed with salt. The Cordillera de la Sal was formed million years ago, before being a lake, which bottom was ascending by the same movements of the earth coast that gave origin to the Andean Mountain Range and was molded through time by the rain, the wind and the sun of the Atacama Desert. The weather in the area where the Cordillera de la Sal is located is desert. There is a marked thermal oscillation between day and night. The average maximum temperature is of 24º C and the minimum of 17,1º C. the summer precipitations are more frequent and the average maximum is 3 mm. The Cordillera de la Sal has a great variety of natural sculptures, different types of stratifications and varied colorations due to the mineral diversity of the place. When exiting this mountain range, you enter the Salar de Atacama (salt flat) from there you can appreciate a panoramic view of the oasis that composes San Pedro de Atacama. Following the road to this town, you cross the Valle de la Muerte (Valley of Death). How to get to Cordillera de la Sal: You get to Calama by air or by land on the route 25 CH. Calama-San Pedro de Atacama: by land on the route CH-23, through the public and private transport.
