Corruption: The inspector generals office in their audit found that bidders - with the help of other bidders or officials within the Lt. Governors Office - rigged the auctions to acquire properties at bottom-dollar prices. In more than a dozen cases, the highest bidder was not awarded the bid. In several cases, the winning bidder was not even a registered bidder. The reports findings revealed that the Lt. Governors Office illegally transferred 16 properties to people who were not considered the highest bidders. Of those properties, 15 were in the St. Thomas-St. John District, and one was on St. Croix. Now.... This office covers taxes, banking and insurance. The Lt. Governors office has a significant role in shaping our economy and it is unconscionable that those people in power abused the publics trust. On another note, that office has not taken a serious stance on protecting the property of our people. Citizens are losing land without them being given a fair chance to enter into a payment plan before resorting to auctioning land that mainly goes to foreigners. We are selling out these islands. While I do believe that taxes must be paid because they do fund many of our bonds, the system must also be fair and presently it is not. The entire system must be restructured.
