Cosmos last night demonstrated that science is hard work. A scientist spent six years cleaning a lab, just to get it contaminant free enough so he could get reliable lead readings on a piece of rock, and thus figure out the age of the earth. It takes a special kind of person to be so doggedly determined, that hed spend six years of his life, painstakingly removing contaminants from a lab. Of course he could have avoided all that hard work and simply read the bible and do a few simple calculations. He would have then figured out that the earth is only 6000 years old or so. The bible is convenient for when you want to avoid heavy intellectual lifting and want ready, easy answers. If youre intellectually lazy, youd love biblical explanations for phenomena. If you really want to understand phenomena, youd instead welcome the hard work that it takes to actually figure things out, even if it involves spending six years just cleaning a lab.
