Cost of Transportation. Wheels- Toyota Corolla XL (LE86) 1987 1.3L Purchase price = RM7000. (Bugger me didnt know I was conned- gaved the guy extra RM100!) Market price was 4000. Threw in a spoiled seat, leaking boot, malfunctioning light switches that would miraculously turn my lights on and leave me stranded when the battery runs out of juice. Oh BTW, She Coughs, and Crackles and sputters out, at critical moments, like halfway into a roundabout. After getting fed up too many times- and no one dares to drive my car Billy Song/ Junnie Shu Jun I gave it an Overhaul. Rebore the piston walls, new oversized pistons, new gaskets, new carburettor, new engine mountings. Made the final cost of the car, RM12,000. Brought it across the south China Sea, Outfitted with the technological marvel called a Surbo (RM160) that gave me much improved power and mileage. Upgraded to alloy rims from my rusted steel (apparently not stainless) rims RM 240 a full set. Felt Mileage Dropped from 510km/tank to 450/tank due to heavy rims, engine sluggish/ was using pretronas/ Esso. Opted for Caltex here ( therere no Caltex stations in the whole of Borneo) Now my mileage is 556km /tank. On a 27 year old car. Driving is such a pleasure when 27 year old Granddaddy Toyota XL does 0-60kmh much faster than the Vios or City beside me at the stop lights. Enjoy the engine rumble at 3000rpm when I overtake cars at 5th gear. Pure awesome feeling. The feeling of raw power is priceless. Just afraid any new car in the future, despite lots more safety features, wouldnt match up the fun of the drive- at triple or quadruple the cost.
